Motivation and Mentorship

Connection between mentorship and student motivation

Mentorship plays a crucial role in student motivation. When students have a mentor, they often experience increased motivation for several reasons.

Personalized Guidance: Mentors provide personalized attention and guidance, helping students set and achieve academic and personal goals. This individualized support can significantly boost a student’s confidence and motivation.

Role Modeling: A mentor serves as a positive role model, demonstrating qualities like dedication, perseverance, and a growth mindset. Witnessing these traits in action can inspire students to adopt similar attitudes towards their own education.

Clearer Pathways: Mentors can help students see the bigger picture and understand the steps needed to achieve their goals. This clarity can reduce feelings of uncertainty or aimlessness, leading to increased motivation.

Feedback and Accountability: Regular feedback from a mentor can help students track their progress and understand areas for improvement. Knowing that someone is holding them accountable can motivate students to stay on track.

Increased Confidence: Knowing that there’s someone in their corner can boost a student’s self-esteem and confidence. This newfound belief in their abilities can drive them to tackle challenges with greater enthusiasm.

Emotional Support: A mentor provides a safe space for students to express their concerns and frustrations. Having someone who listens and understands can alleviate stress and anxiety, fostering a more positive outlook and increased motivation.

Expanded Perspectives: Mentors can expose students to new ideas, experiences, and opportunities they might not have encountered otherwise. This exposure can ignite fresh interests and passions, fueling greater motivation.

Sense of Belonging: A mentor can help students feel connected to their school or learning community. This sense of belonging can lead to a stronger sense of purpose and a greater desire to engage in learning activities.

Inspirational stories about mentorship will warm your heart.

1. Nancy A. Shenker & Jim D'Arcangelo

Shenker is the CEO and Founder of a marketing company called The on Switch. D'Arcangelo, six years her younger, has helped her with content strategy and marketing tech.

"At first, I was very stubborn," she says. "But I have to admit that the rewritten piece still had my voice but was more intelligent and engaging."Despite Shenker's many years in the business, she isn't afraid to admit that she still benefits from this kind of help. As she says, "You are never too old to be mentored!"

2. Kelsey Nelson & Hallie Fisher

Kelsey Nelson didn't immediately click with Hallie Fisher, a manager several rungs above her on the corporate ladder at the small PR firm where they worked. "To be honest I was terrified of her," Nelson says. Nelson describes Fisher as "a no-nonsense, get-over-its Midwesterner through and through," and someone who, "quite literally pulls no punches and doesn’t just ask, but expects everyone on her staff to be great."

Overall, mentorship creates a supportive environment that nurtures a student’s intrinsic motivation, providing them with the tools and encouragement they need to succeed.
